ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY (12A)

Director: Paul B. Preciado
Starring:
France, 2023, 1 hour 38 minutes, French + English subtitles

Blurring the lines between reality and fiction, this is a playful, moving, metatextual documentary riffing on Virginia Woolf ’s Orlando: A Biography. In Woolf’s novel, the protagonist changes gender midway to become a 36-year-old woman and a century later, Preciado – trans writer, philosopher and activist – sends her a cinematic letter to tell her that Orlando has emerged from her fiction to live a life she could never have imagined. He brings together a cast of 26 contemporary trans and non-binary people, aged 8 to 70, to embody the character, each in their own way. Preciado’s meticulous, bracingly intellectual, yet highly accessible film invites us to see how everything is constantly in flux.
