A brilliant, largely faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's great novel about a post-apocalyptic future in which one man's determined battle to save his son plays out against a bleak background of death and destruction. As the pair plods slowly southward, around them the world dies, civilization breaks down and marauding gangs of survivors are as big a threat as hunger. Thankfully the film is slightly lighter in tone than the book, anchored by an intense central performance from Viggo Mortensen. Meticulously it captures both the visceral beauty and horror of an unrelenting struggle to survive each day and the enduring love between father and son.
