Teetering dangerously between childhood and adulthood, Mia is a foul-mouthed 15 year-old simmering with resentment and quick to anger. Mia loves to dance and clearly yearns for better things, but the only pleasures on offer in her dreary Essex estate are alcohol and sex. When her mum's latest boyfriend (Michael Fassbender from Hunger) complements Mia on her dancing we're clearly heading into deep waters. Totally gripping and constantly surprising, with a sharp script and excellent performances all round, Arnold's clear understanding of what drives teenage girls makes for a sensitive, imaginative, and credible portrayal of Mia's inner life that suffuses her story with an enduring optimism.

Winner of BAFTA for Outstanding British Film 2010

"another highly intelligent, involving film from one of the most powerful voices in British cinema." Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
