Hawaiian lawyer Matt King (Clooney) has always been the backup parent, so when his wife falls into a coma, he has to rise to the challenge of looking after his two feisty daughters. With little idea of how to cope, he must also wrestle with the secrets his wife has kept from him and the expectations of his wider family to cash in on a huge land deal. While the subject is serious, the touch is light, and the flawed and funny characters provide plenty of comedy, from bleak humour to sassy dialogue and even slapstick. With his acute observations of human shortcomings Payne (Sideways) moves seamlessly from wry humour to heartbreaking sadness.
