Breaking The Waves (18)

Director: Lars Von Trier
Starring: Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgard, Katrin Cartlidge
Denmark/Sweden/France, 1996, 2 hours 39 minutes

Set in a small rural community in the North of Scotland this is an amazing film about the power of love. Deeply in love with her husband, Jan, Bess feels guilty after he is paralyzed in an accident. Jan urges Bess to take another lover. The more deviant in her sexual behaviour Bess becomes, the more she believes that her actions are guided by God and are helping Jan recover. A staggering performance by Emily Watson makes this one of the truly great works of European cinema of the last decade.
