Derek Jarman Event with
Andy Kimpton Nye and screening of Life As Art

Director: Andy Kimpton Nye
Starring: Derek Jarman, Tilda Swinton,
Tariq Ali, Simon Fisher Turner
UK, 2004, 1 hour

One of Britain’s most innovative and controversial filmmakers, Derek Jarman was a hugely talented painter, writer, set-designer and gardener. He fused a radical queer sensibility with a love of artifice and a highly personal, fiercely independent vision of the possibilities of cinema. Avant-garde in method but largely nostalgic in temperament, he was a maverick whose films (Sebastiane, Jubilee, Edward II, Caravaggio, The Garden, The Tempest) intertwine art, politics and sex in highly poetic fashion. Illustrated with clips from across his career and interviews with key collaborators (including his inspirational muse Tilda Swinton), this is a revealing and insightful portrait of one of the most original filmmakers Britain has ever produced.

The director Andy Kimpton Nye will introduce the film and lead a discussion about Derek Jarman’s career and films.
