Czech Dream (12A)

Best of British

Director: Vit Klusak & Filip Remunda
Czech Republic, 2004,
1 hour 27 minutes, subtitles

This funny and provocative analysis of the world of media manipulation is based on a hoax perpetrated by two film students on an unsuspecting public. They organize an advertising campaign for the launch of a new hypermarket. They hire a leading ad agency and go through the full marketing process, TV and radio spots, billboards, a song, website, flyers and newspaper ads. On opening day the final confrontation with their deluded public is both instructive and surprising. The hoax attracted widespread media coverage and lead to fierce debates on national TV. A great insight into the process of creating a brand and persuading people to buy into a dream that is telling, universally relevant, but told with a surreal humour that is particularly Czech.
